BEX® is based on the African Excellence Model (AEM) which is a performance excellence framework developed by the African Excellence Forum (AEF) to provide a structured approach to achieving excellence in organizations operating on African continent. AEM framework is defined by the following criteria:
Direction: This criterion covers an organization's vision, mission, and values, as well as its strategic planning and performance measures.
Governance: This criterion covers an organization's leadership, governance structures, and risk management practices.
Eco-System: This criterion covers an organization's relationships with its stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, partners, and the community.

Proficient: Demonstrates mastery of the published competencies at a level meeting certification expectations as defined in the BEX General Competency Guide; and shows an ability to analyze problems related to the competency and develop effective solutions.
Basic: Demonstrates published competencies at a level of performance minimally meeting certification expectations as defined in the BEX General Competency Guide; and displays effective communication and collaboration skills related to the competency, including the ability to work with stakeholders and manage relationships effectively.
